Join the Rally in Protest against the American Legislative Exchange Council at the offices of Pretti Flaherty Beliveau.
Let's go head on with the Lobbyists !! American Legislative Exchange Council – ALEC is a far right wing lobby whose lobbying efforts impact every state. Donors include American Petroleum Institute, ExxonMobil, Charles and David Koch, Wal-Mart, Peabody Energy, Pfizer, Bayer, Reynolds American and many other major corporations. The U.S. Justice Department is being pressured to investigate ALEC's non-profit status.
Preti Flaherty Beliveau & Pachios lobbyist Ann Robinson is headof the Maine chapter of ALEC and is a close advisor to Gov. Paul LePage. The ALEC national organization has developed model bills promoting their agenda. Some have been turned into Maine applicable bills, many developed by PFB&P, and submitted in the legislature by ALEC supported legislators. One such bill eliminating same day voter registration was enacted into law then overturned by citizen's initiative by a large margin.
ALEC's agenda in Maine includes voter suppression tactics, voter ID requirements, eliminate same day voter registration, favorable redistricting, union busting, right to work, weakened unemployment and workman comp benefits, cuts to Mainecare and other social programs, tax breaks for the rich, weakened environmental and safety regulations, weakened business regulations etc.
David and Charles Koch, major ALEC supporters, own mineral and pipeline shipping rights for a portion of the tar sands oil coming out of Alberta Canada.
Plans are underway to ship tar sands oil through the Montreal to Portland
pipeline (236 miles) for shipment to East and Gulf coast refineries. This 70 year old pipeline was built with materials susceptible to the corrosive nature of the tar sands oil. An existing pipeline built of the same materials located in Michigan failed spilling 884,000 gallons of tar sands oil into the Kalamazoo River. Future plans include an incredibly polluting tar sands oil refinery at the BNAS.
The Koch brothers donated a million dollars to the Republican Governors
Association which in turn donated nearly a million dollars to the Maine RGA Pac. Former Waldo county senator Carol Weston is a former ALEC chairperson and now heads another ALEC funded Maine organization, "Americans for Prosperity".
Also Pierce Atwood lobbyist Cathy Conors, had a hand in the "takings" bill that came before the legislature today, LD 1810, which would require the state of Maine to pay corporations for lost profits due to state regulations.
